In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a state of emergency and catastrophic health emergency was proclaimed in Maryland on March 5, 2020. As part of this response, Governor Hogan issued an emergency order on March 16, 2020 that prohibited electric, gas, water, sewage, phone, cable TV, and internet service provider companies from shutting off any residential customer’s service, or charging any residential late fees. As a result of the order, the Town’s late fee and disconnection policy was suspended at that time. The emergency order recently expired effective September 1 allowing providers to resume such policies.
Effective November 1, 2020, the Town will resume its late fee and disconnection policy for past-due accounts. In order to avoid late fees and disconnection after due notice, we will require all accounts with past-due balances to be paid to current by October 30, 2020.
We understand this may present a hardship to some customers. Any customers who may have been financially affected by the pandemic and are unable to bring their account to current by this date must contact the Town Office to establish payment arrangements to help reduce past due balances and avoid penalties.
